A conceptual environment built around a collapsed freeway overpass — broken bridge spans, hanging slabs of concrete church, telephone poles, and graffiti. The audience enters beneath the wreckage. An ambitious, image-driven design that turns the theatre architecture itself into the world of the play. The chalked word that recurs across the set is drawn from the text of Suzan-Lori Parks’ play, a modern retelling of The Scarlet Letter.
The full arc of the design — production photography of the realized, lit set, the scale model that worked out the collapsed-overpass geometry, and the working drawings behind it: ground plans, elevations, sections, and construction details.
